The Catholic University of America Reviews

The unique challenge of the theology program at CUA is that it tries to exist simultaneously in two very different academic worlds: As a national research university with American pedagogy and accreditation, and as an ecclesiastical faculty with pontifical accreditation. Roman universities tend to require twice as many classes that go half as deep as American universities, even at the graduate level. In trying to meet both expectations, something is often lost in translation. A typical master's class involved on one hand lay and religious students who had at least one degree in theology and were looking to specialize and go in depth, and on the other seminarians preparing for priesthood who were often taking their first theology courses. It was not a good fit, and a common complaint was that courses had to be "dumbed down" to early undergraduate levels to accommodate the seminarians.
Good: Diverse student body with common interest, support for graduate programs and some funding for grad students.
Bad: The funding was insufficient, and I had to take a part time job while a master's student, which had a negative effect on my research time. On needing a medical leave of absence, I had to pay about $4000/semester, which was all the more difficult being unable to work or keep a scholarship for the same reasons i had to take leave. Poor pay and support for teaching faculty (adjuncts, fellows).

During a pandemic, I was worried that school would be lacking resources or that the classes would suffer. This was not the case with Catholic University! My classes were even more helpful and amazing than I could ever imagine! The teachers were ready and able to teach in a virtual setting! In every class I was provided with large amounts of resources and support! The class work was always useful towards my future! The homework and other projects always allows me to dust off my creative muscles and open my eyes to other forms of learning and teaching! I am more prepared not only for more class work but for more professional opportunities! I am ready and excited to face other academic and professional obstacles because the tools I have been given so far in all my classes! Each semester is a new adventure full of chances to learn! I never feel my times is wasted! Every minute is useful and so very exciting! Catholic University of America makes learning easy, super fun, and so wonderful!
