W&J is highly underrated. It is a beautiful campus with a mix of well-preserved historic and new modern buildings. Tasty, healthy food is available in the main dining commons and separate grill with plenty of places for students to congregate. The student vibe is upbeat, friendly, and motivated. Dedicated professors make classes challenging but interesting. The school has a tight knit community feel. Also, the location offers the best of both worlds: safe suburban campus just a short car or school-provided shuttle ride to Pittsburgh. The school has competitive sports teams and games/matches are well-attended by supportive students and faculty. If you want small class size, lots of academic and emotional support, and professors who will push you to be the absolute best version of yourself, this is the place for you!
At W&J, I have found a community that makes me feel at home and gives me an opportunity for my voice to be heard. The students, staff, and faculty are very friendly and appreciate any input I may have. I love that students get to pick their advisor(s) once you decide a major because I got to pick an advisor that I am comfortable with and trust. This relationship will be formed throughout college and even after. I also love the various activities and events the college puts on from “Feel Good Friday’s” (free snacks, treats, and/or games around lunch time) to Big Bingo and more! The college always tries to have multiple activities during the week and weekend, and there is a shuttle bus to take you to all the shopping plazas around campus. Many of the students, including me, enjoy attending the various sporting events held on campus throughout the year. If you want a small-town feel with ample opportunities and experiences, then W&J is the perfect place for you to find your own path!
My experience at W&J was mostly positive. The highlights were certainly rigorous academic courses and the personal relationships I was able to develop with several professors. My academics definitely prepared me for higher degrees and even over-qualified me for many entry level positions in the biological sciences. My professors were instrumental to my success and I always felt genuinely cared about as a student and an individual rather than just as another face in a lecture hall. One thing I'd like to see improve at the college is to spend students' tuition and other funding on improving the fundamental things needed on campus (finishing the tech center's upper floors, renovating old buildings, improving Wi-Fi in student housing) rather than so much going to extra events and treats designed to look good on social media posts.
