What is a sustainability studies major?

Students majoring in sustainability studies focus on the concept of sustainability from an interdisciplinary perspective. Courses may include instruction in sustainable development, environmental policies, ethics, ecology, landscape architecture, city and regional planning, economics, natural resources, sociology, and anthropology.

How popular is sustainability studies as a major?

Each year, around 800 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 5 students obtain an associate degree in sustainability studies. In 2021, 1,215 students received a bachelor's degree and 14 students received an associate degree. This is 12% more sustainability studies majors than there were in 2020. Sustainability studies is a relatively popular major compared to other environmental science majors.
