What is a speech language pathology major?
Speech language pathology students learn to evaluate the speaking, language interpretation, and related physiological and cognitive capabilities of children and/or adults and develop treatment and rehabilitative solutions in consultation with clinicians and educators. This includes instruction in the anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing, biomechanics of swallowing and vocal articulation, communications disorders, psychology of auditory function and cognitive communication, language assessment and diagnostic techniques, and rehabilitative and management therapies.

How popular is speech language pathology as a major?
Each year, around 6,100 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 160 students obtain an associate degree in speech language pathology. In 2021, 5,936 students received a bachelor's degree and 140 students received an associate degree. This is relatively the same number of speech language pathology majors as there were in 2020. Speech language pathology is one of the most popular majors within health professions.
