What is a school psychology major?

A student of school psychology studies the developmental processes of children and associated disorders and prepares individuals for the independent professional practice of clinical child psychology. This may involve coursework in developmental neuropsychology, child psychopathology, testing of children and adolescents, pediatric psychology, psychosocial variables in child development, clinical skills, family therapy, behavioral assessment and intervention, consultation, professional standards and ethics, and applications to topics such as infancy, childhood, and adolescence.

How popular is school psychology as a major?

Each year, around 110 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and fewer than 5 students obtain an associate degree in school psychology. In 2021, 98 students received a bachelor's degree and fewer than 5 students received an associate degree. This is 2% fewer school psychology majors than there were in 2020. School psychology is a relatively uncommon major within psychology.
