What is a physician assistant major?

A curriculum that enables individuals to practice medicine, including diagnoses and treatment therapies, under the supervision of a physician. It includes instruction in the basic medical and clinical sciences and specialized preparation in fields such as family medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology, general surgery, psychiatry, and behavioral medicine. The curriculum also covers the delivery of health care services to homebound patients, rural populations, and underserved populations, as well as community health services.

How popular is physician assistant as a major?

Each year, around 500 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 75 students obtain an associate degree in physician assistant. In 2021, 408 students received a bachelor's degree and fewer than 5 students received an associate degree. This is 6% fewer physician assistant majors than there were in 2020. Physician assistant is a relatively uncommon major within medical assistants and technician.
