What is a physical therapy major?

Physical therapy students are taught how to alleviate physical and functional impairments and limitations caused by injury or disease through the design and implementation of therapeutic interventions to promote fitness and health. Instruction focuses on functional anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, neuroscience, pathological physiology, analysis of dysfunction, movement dynamics, physical growth process, management of musculoskeletal disorders, clinical evaluation and measurement, client assessment and supervision, care plan development and documentation, physical therapy modalities, rehabilitation psychology, physical therapy administration, and professional standards and ethics.

How popular is physical therapy as a major?

Each year, around 340 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 130 students obtain an associate degree in physical therapy. In 2021, 301 students received a bachelor's degree and 95 students received an associate degree. This is 10% fewer physical therapy majors than there were in 2020. Physical therapy is a relatively uncommon major within kinesiology and physical therapy.
