What is an operations management major?

Students learning operations management are trained to manage and direct the physical and/or technical functions of a firm or organization, particularly those relating to development, production, and manufacturing. This includes instruction in principles of general management, manufacturing and production systems, plant management, equipment maintenance management, production control, industrial labor relations and skilled trades supervision, strategic manufacturing policy, systems analysis, productivity analysis and cost control, and materials planning.

How popular is operations management as a major?

Each year, around 3,630 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 250 students obtain an associate degree in operations management. In 2021, 3,643 students received a bachelor's degree and 185 students received an associate degree. This is 6% fewer operations management majors than there were in 2020. Operations management is a relatively popular major compared to other business and management majors.
