What is a midwifery major?
Midwifery programs prepare individuals to provide pre-natal, natural birth, and immediate postpartum care to pregnant women in jurisdictions licensing direct (non-nursing) training for midwives. Course topics include basic obstetrics, women's health, fetal development, childbirth education, maternal nutrition and health, labor support, natural childbirth, postpartum support, prebirth counseling and risk screening, management of obstetric emergencies, patient referral, applicable regulations, and professional standards and ethics.

How popular is midwifery as a major?
Each year, around 20 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 20 students obtain an associate degree in midwifery. In 2021, 26 students received a bachelor's degree and 17 students received an associate degree. This is 19% more midwifery majors than there were in 2020. Midwifery is a relatively uncommon major within health professions.
