What is a medical social work major?

Medical social work programs prepare students for the specialized professional practice of social work, in collaboration with other health care professionals, in hospitals and other health care facilities and organizations. This includes instruction in social work, psychiatric case work, clinical interviewing techniques, therapeutic intervention strategies, patient testing and evaluation, patient and family counseling, social rehabilitation, patient care planning, record-keeping, and support services liaison.

How popular is medical social work as a major?

Each year, around 180 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 140 students obtain an associate degree in medical social work. In 2021, 160 students received a bachelor's degree and 120 students received an associate degree. This is 8% fewer medical social work majors than there were in 2020. Medical social work is a relatively uncommon major within public policy and social services.
