What is a massage therapy and bodywork major?

Massage therapy and bodywork students learn to provide relief and improved health and well-being to clients through the application of manual techniques for manipulating skin, muscles, and connective tissues. Curriculum focal points include Western (Swedish) massage, sports massage, myotherapy/trigger point massage, myofascial release, deep tissue massage, cranio-sacral therapy, reflexology, massage safety and emergency management, client counseling, practice management, applicable regulations, and professional standards and ethics.

How popular is massage therapy and bodywork as a major?

Each year, around 20 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 790 students obtain an associate degree in massage therapy and bodywork. In 2021, 14 students received a bachelor's degree and 538 students received an associate degree. This is 11% fewer massage therapy and bodywork majors than there were in 2020. Massage therapy and bodywork is a relatively popular major compared to other kinesiology and physical therapy majors.
