What is a human development major?

Human development programs focus on basic human developmental and behavioral characteristics of the individual. Subtopics include adult development and aging, developmental services, behavioral sciences as well as cognitive science and child development. The instruction includes the conditions that influence human growth and development, strategies that promote growth and development across the life span, and the study of family systems.

How popular is human development as a major?

Each year, around 9,220 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 220 students obtain an associate degree in human development. In 2021, 8,810 students received a bachelor's degree and 295 students received an associate degree. This is 7% fewer human development majors than there were in 2020. Human development is one of the most popular majors within anthropology and sociology.
