What is a fire science and firefighting major?

A study path focusing on the theory and practice of fires and fire-fighting. This may include instruction in fire chemistry and physics, combustible materials, computer science, building construction, fire codes and related laws, fire hydraulics, fire command, fire prevention/inspection, fire protection systems, fire suppression systems, fire/arson investigation, occupational safety, equipment operation, emergency medicine and communications.

How popular is fire science and firefighting as a major?

Each year, around 330 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 2,120 students obtain an associate degree in fire science and firefighting. In 2021, 267 students received a bachelor's degree and 1,953 students received an associate degree. This is 6% fewer fire science and firefighting majors than there were in 2020. Fire science and firefighting is one of the most popular majors within protective services.
