What is a fashion and apparel design major?

This concentration prepares individuals to apply artistic principles and techniques to the professional design of commercial fashions, apparel, and accessories, and the management of fashion development projects. Courses include instruction in apparel design, accessory design, the design of men's, women's, and children's wear, flat pattern design, computer-assisted design and manufacturing, concept planning, designing in specific materials, labor and cost analysis, history of fashion, fabric art and printing, and the principles of management and operations in the fashion industry.

How popular is fashion and apparel design as a major?

Each year, around 2,040 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 1,150 students obtain an associate degree in fashion and apparel design. In 2021, 1,914 students received a bachelor's degree and 897 students received an associate degree. This is 7% fewer fashion and apparel design majors than there were in 2020. Fashion and apparel design is a relatively popular major compared to other design majors.
