What is an equine studies major?
Equine studies focus on the horse, horsemanship, and related subjects and prepare individuals to care for horses and horse equipment, ride and drive horses for leisure, sport, show, and professional purposes, and manage the training of horses and riders. Course topics include horse breeding, nutrition, health, and safety; history of the horse and horsemanship; horse development and training; riding and equestrian technique; stable, paddock, and track management; and equipment maintenance and repair.

How popular is equine studies as a major?
Each year, around 490 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 320 students obtain an associate degree in equine studies. In 2021, 454 students received a bachelor's degree and 254 students received an associate degree. This is 10% fewer equine studies majors than there were in 2020. Equine studies is a relatively popular major compared to other agricultural sciences majors.
