Engineering mechanics

What is an engineering mechanics major?

This course of study concentrates on the application of the mathematical and scientific principles of classical mechanics to the analysis and evaluation of the behavior of structures, forces and materials in engineering problems. This includes instruction in statics, kinetics, dynamics, kinematics, celestial mechanics, stress and failure, and electromagnetism.

How much do engineering mechanics majors make?

median average salary

$101,500/yr

The national average salary for engineering mechanics graduates in the United States is $101,500 per year. Those in the top 10 percent make over $245,000 a year, while the bottom 10 percent make under $34,000 a year. While salary ranges can vary by role, industry, and location, engineering mechanics graduates typically make between $62,200 and $160,000 per year.

How popular is engineering mechanics as a major?

Each year, around 120 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 10 students obtain an associate degree in engineering mechanics. In 2021, 116 students received a bachelor's degree and 12 students received an associate degree. This is 31% more engineering mechanics majors than there were in 2020. Engineering mechanics is a relatively uncommon major within engineering.
