What is a child development major?

Programs in child development focus on the intellectual, social, emotional, and biological development of children and the planning and design of related human services. It includes instruction in parent-child relations, parenting practices, special needs of children, parental and environmental influences on child development, external support services, and related public policy issues.

How popular is child development as a major?

Each year, around 1,720 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 800 students obtain an associate degree in child development. In 2021, 1,702 students received a bachelor's degree and 769 students received an associate degree. This is 6% more child development majors than there were in 2020. Child development is a relatively popular major compared to other anthropology and sociology majors.
