What is a cellular biology major?

Cellular biology students study the structure, function, and regulation of cells as individual units and as components of larger systems. Class subjects include cell chemistry, cellular dynamics, cellular replication and reproduction, cell anatomy, membrane function, organelles, cell adhesion and extracellular matrices, cell dynamics and motility, meiosis and mitosis, signal transduction, regulation, recognition and defense mechanisms, the cell cycle, cell metabolism and respiration, gene expression, and studies of cell types and characteristics.

How popular is cellular biology as a major?

Each year, around 3,610 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 45 students obtain an associate degree in cellular biology. In 2021, 4,074 students received a bachelor's degree and 74 students received an associate degree. This is 3% more cellular biology majors than there were in 2020. Cellular biology is one of the most popular majors within biology.
