What is a carpentry major?

Carpentry prepares students to apply technical knowledge and skills to lay out, cut, fabricate, erect, install, and repair wooden structures and fixtures, using hand and power tools. This includes training in technical mathematics, framing, construction materials and selection, job estimating, blueprint reading, foundations and roughing-in, finish carpentry techniques, and applicable codes and standards.

How popular is carpentry as a major?

Each year, fewer than 5 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 470 students obtain an associate degree in carpentry. In 2021, fewer than 5 students received a bachelor's degree and 426 students received an associate degree. This is 20% fewer carpentry majors than there were in 2020. Carpentry is a relatively popular major compared to other building and construction majors.
