What is a biotechnology major?

Biotechnology programs concentrate on the application of the biological sciences, biochemistry, and genetics to the preparation of new and enhanced agricultural, environmental, clinical, and industrial products, including the commercial exploitation of microbes, plants, and animals. One may expect course topics to include bioinformatics, gene identification, phylogenetics and comparative genomics, bioinorganic chemistry, immunoassaying, DNA sequencing, xenotransplantation, genetic engineering, industrial microbiology, drug and biologic development, enzyme-based production processes, patent law, biotechnology management and marketing, applicable regulations, and biotechnology ethics.

How popular is biotechnology as a major?

Each year, around 940 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 240 students obtain an associate degree in biotechnology. In 2021, 1,022 students received a bachelor's degree and 196 students received an associate degree. This is 5% more biotechnology majors than there were in 2020. Biotechnology is a relatively popular major compared to other biology majors.
