Students of baking and pastry arts serve as professional bakers and pastry specialists in restaurants or other commercial baking establishments. This includes instruction in bread and pastry making, bread and pastry handling and storage, cake and pastry decorating, baking industry operations, product packaging and marketing operations, and counter display and service.

How popular is baking and pastry arts as a major?

Each year, around 70 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 2,200 students obtain an associate degree in baking and pastry arts. In 2021, 42 students received a bachelor's degree and 1,253 students received an associate degree. This is 10% fewer baking and pastry arts majors than there were in 2020. Baking and pastry arts is a relatively uncommon major within culinary arts.
