Art history students focus on the study of the historical development of art as a social and intellectual phenomenon, the analysis of works of art, and art conservation. Specific instruction is in the theory of art, art history research methods, connoisseurship, the preservation and conservation of works of art, and the study of specific periods, cultures, styles, and themes.

How popular is art history as a major?

Each year, around 2,770 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 25 students obtain an associate degree in art history. In 2021, 2,490 students received a bachelor's degree and 37 students received an associate degree. This is 6% fewer art history majors than there were in 2020.
