What is an anthropology major?

Anthropology is a program that focuses on the systematic study of human beings, their antecedents and related primates, and their cultural behavior and institutions, in comparative perspective. It includes instruction in biological/physical anthropology, primatology, human paleontology and prehistoric archeology, hominid evolution, anthropological linguistics, ethnography, ethnology, ethnohistory, socio-cultural anthropology, psychological anthropology, research methods, and applications to areas such as medicine, forensic pathology, museum studies, and international affairs.

How popular is anthropology as a major?

Each year, around 9,310 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 850 students obtain an associate degree in anthropology. In 2021, 8,907 students received a bachelor's degree and 950 students received an associate degree. This is 4% fewer anthropology majors than there were in 2020.
