What is an animation, video graphics and special effects major?

This curriculum prepares students to use computer applications and related visual and sound imaging techniques to manipulate images and information originating as film, video, still photographs, digital copy, soundtracks, and physical objects in order to communicate messages simulating real-world content. It includes instruction in specialized camerawork and equipment operation and maintenance, image capture, computer programming, dubbing, CAD applications, and applications to specific commercial, industrial, and entertainment needs.

Each year, around 2,390 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 1,070 students obtain an associate degree in animation, video graphics and special effects. In 2021, 2,699 students received a bachelor's degree and 1,096 students received an associate degree. This is 4% more animation, video graphics and special effects majors than there were in 2020. Animation, video graphics and special effects is one of the most popular majors within film and photography.
