What is an aircraft maintenance major?

Aircraft maintenance is a program that prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to repair, service, and maintain all aircraft components other than engines, propellers, avionics, and instruments. Instructional topics include layout and fabrication of sheet metal, fabric, wood, and other materials into structural members, parts, and fittings, and replacement of damaged or worn parts such as control cables and hydraulic units.

How popular is aircraft maintenance as a major?

Each year, around 200 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 1,840 students obtain an associate degree in aircraft maintenance. In 2021, 141 students received a bachelor's degree and 1,972 students received an associate degree. This is 11% more aircraft maintenance majors than there were in 2020. Aircraft maintenance is one of the most popular majors within mechanics.
