From Bates College
From its inception in 1855, Bates has recruited students without regard to race, religion, national origin, or sex. Bates was founded to remove barriers to education, including financial barriers. We award financial aid based solely on demonstrated need, meeting 100% of our students’ financial need through grants, loans, and campus employment. The average Bates grant for the Class of 2026 was $54,504; the average federal student loan debt for 2022 graduates was $13,531 — less than half the national average.
