ASU online is a self-paced learning environment. Professors upload pre-recorded lecture videos and assignments on Canvas, there is no set time that a student must log in to class. While I mentioned that the course work is self-paced, there is still deadlines to be met. My greatest struggle with this was time management. As a Starbucks shift supervisor, I work around 35-40 hours weekly. It was recommended by my academic advisor to allocate around 20 weekly hours per class. Professors were accomodating, help center was open 24/7, and there were so many resources available for online students. I struggled to practice self discipline and motivation, as no one was there to hold me accountable. Despite my struggles in time management and discipline, I was extremely satisfied with my experience in virtual learning! One improvement I'd like to see is an increase in student interaction. Online school can be isolating, even more so when you have no interactions with other students.
Overall, I've really liked my experience with ASU Online! Even though all the courses are online, you have an appointed success coach, professors, and teaching assistants who all really do want to see you succeed. I have never felt like I was getting a lesser educational experience because my classes were online. ASU really makes an effort to make their online courses engaging, and in a lot of the classes I've been in, discussions were utilized to make sure that you can be connected with the other students in the course. Another nice part about ASU online is that, if you're near campus, you can participate in events just like an on-campus student would be able to. I will say that the classes are very reliant on the students being self motivated to complete their coursework, watch lectures, and make connections with others, which can be difficult if that's not what you're used to. However, for me, the positives of ASU Online really do outweigh any negatives!
I have found the online professors to be completely unhelpful when situations arise that prevent me from achieving my goals. In addition to multiple teachers not responding to my emails, there have been zero compassion when it comes to my internet cutting out on a test after the second problem on a test or where a test is set for a due date but was actually open the day before and ended at 8am on the day the test was due. The teachers clearly copy and paste their announcement but complain that students do not come to them for assistance. When the students do, they are met with a cold non-understanding response, if any. It is clear the educational staff at ASU are not in support of students achieving their academic goals, for if they were, there would be measures taking to assists them in success. Good luck!
